Maybe each case is unique, but I know someone with an autistic child. They have 2 cats and 1 dog. Those animals mostly get stared at by the autist. Every once in a while if you tell the autist to go pet the animals, the autist will "act" like he is petting..."hoverhanding"...rather than actually touch the animals. Kid is extremely uncomfortable that the animal is so unpredictable (aka sentient) vs. petting stuffed animals and such.

also it is an autistic boy..no surprise obvs.
