From a philosophical standpoint what you say is true. People have a very hard time reconciling with the fact that so much of our life circumstances is out of our control. We like to live in fucking lala land where everything is just and fair, and everything that happens to you is a fault of your own, that the maltreatment or reward you receive in life is dependent entirely on factors that you and only you have custody over. And thus you are treated as such.

But reality just doesn't work that way. Our minds and personalities are byproducts of our environment, upbringing, and genetics. Free will is largely an illusion.
