In some cases I will have to agree with you.
I've seen how populism has been getting derailed into sexual politics and appealing to women rather than barebones policy initiatives over time.

It is definitely a good argument against mob rule democracy and upholding the rule of law even if it is not popular to do so. The thing is both sides of the political spectrum will say they agree with this but start ranting about "muh principles" and "we need to fight to win and go with want the people want" during election season.

It's another reason why when politicians say things like the American people you can only roll your eyes. The US is too large a country and polarized over cultural issues to be close to being united politically.
These days when conservative politicians talk about the American people they mainly refer to people in the heartland with families going back several generations. These days when liberals politicians talk about the American people they mainly mean working moms, LGBT and queer communities of color and immigrants.
