Russia is much more multicultural and multiethnic than people give it credit for. It's like if America hadn't killed off the vast majority of the Native Americans here, and they were concentrated in specific areas and wanted independent states and countries.
If Russia allowed all of them to make new states and countries, there would be practically no Russia left. It would be like the warring states period of China or Italy.
Russia has a pipeline that runs through Chechnya. Russia has modernized and introduced Chechnya as part of Russia, but now Chechnya wants independence but also to keep everything that Russia created for it? A net loss of millions if not billions of dollars for Russia. Very obvious to me why allowing Chechnya independence is not practical and while "lust" can still be a factor, it is far from being the main or even secondary one.
