In numerous cultures around the world the concept of 'honour' or esteem held in the eyes of a worthy community is very important. A man's honour/family/clan honour is usually tied to the chastity and modesty of the female members of his household.
For example, if a female member of his household uncovers her hair or flirts with boys, behaves immodestly, runs off with a man from a different clan/caste/tribe she can be strictly punished if not killed by her brothers or father.

In such culture (traditional Arab, Pakistani, Chechen, Albanian etc...) women are often referred to as just 'honour' in the sense that their chastity and modesty is so deeply connected to the honour of a man's household.

At one time all cultures held the concept of family honour in high esteem. What caused the decline of honour culture in the west?

Human morality is dependent entirely on how it will effect your reputation. Their whole existance in those cultures dependent on their own and family's reputation. It makes sense if you realize that a huge number of behaviours are a result of biology, and this is a form of social selection pressure.

This doesn't exist in urban areas because the popuation is just too high and everyone doesn't know everyone. So if your reputation got tainted in front of some people, you can just go to the other part of the city and pretend you are something you are not because they won't know your history.

This seems like a high IQ post. Yes. Cities in general lean much further left than rural areas. Also, as you implied civilisation and technological development contribute to the erosion of traditional morals, hierarchies and honour codes. More primitive societies are always strongly honour bound.

I am currently reading Ted’s ‘The Industrial Revolution and its consequences.’ It is fascinating.
