If dolphins become unconscious, they suffocate. Unlike land mammals, they do not have a breathing reflex. You will notice the lack of connecting fabric between the two hemispheres; this is because they operate functionally independent of each other. A dolphin keeps its brain healthy, alternating the hemisphere it is using while the other half goes to "sleep" or at least does all the rejuvenation processes that mammals usually do while sleeping. They need twice as much brain for the same level of intelligence because they are conscious 24 hours a day, every day of their lives. A dolphin always has at least one eye open, corresponding to which side of the brain is in use.

thats actually very interesting, thank you for this anon
what made you wanna post this?

People often overestimate cetacean's (especially dolphins) intelligence but things are way more complex than brain size or even brain to body size ratio. Dolphins simply don't work the same way we do. They also echolocate and a bulk of their brain is solely responsible for making their sonar work which is by itself a very complex ability.

There's not really much evidence that dolphins are any more intelligent than apes or even dogs.

In the navy we use to strap bombs to them and try to get them to blow up other boats... It was a pita...

But they taste REALLY good!
