Privacy?
Saving money on building useless corridors?
Defense against raiders in ancient times and kept out of tradition?
Garden? (Never seen a garden withing them tbh, but it is a thing in Greece for example)
Family Gatherings?
To shelter or/keep out animals?
We don't really have them in europe some farms aside, but usually the living spaces are not split among different houses. It's usually like house, storehouse, garage, stables. I think historically villages here used to have one big palisade for all people. Didn't your ancestors trust ech other enough for that? The only other thing resembling this I can think of here are fortified manorhouses by knights etc..
