I don't even think its that, he used a female protagonist for this game because it has more shock value, the screams have a greater effect (women's voices are more shrill) and people care more about a woman being hurt than a man so it makes it seem "more brutal" just because its a woman

This game seems to have a bit of a niche following after looking into it, I doubt it would have the same following if a man was used as the protagonist, and that's even if it had better graphics

I bet most people here are still more disturbed by a woman's screams than a man's. It's only natural.
High pitched screams of terror from women are more unsettling than screams of terror from a man, which might even be shown as funny and for comedic relief even in horror movies or videogames.
