Same thing. I wouldn't conflate political control with cultural influence. The British raj was a puppet and the Brits weren't really interested in changing the "backward" cultures of the people they exerted control over.

The countries I mentioned Tunisia, Algeria and Morroco could not withstand the onslaught of French influence, political, economic and cultural. While other Arabs and non-Arab middle eastern countries (Iran and Turkey) also came under colonial influence (not Turkey), they broadly speaking either had two options: either imitate their oppressors and become a 'modern, progressive' country (Turkey, Tunisia, Algeria) or essentially enable become inward but still sell out to the West (Egypt, Saudi, Iraq, Syria). Syria, Iraq and Egypt overthrew their kings after Baathist revolutions became socialist countries, but that in itself is dead now. One thing to mention is Islamist movements and groups (Muslim brotherhood) ever since the waning decline of the Ottoman caliphate had a large impact in maintaining religious traditions and ensuring cultural norms of the people were not trampled over by western ideas. Lebanon meanwhile, is a hodgepodge of different religions, cultures and peoples. It's not a homogenous country by any means.
