First, a look back in history: until rather recently, the vast majority of all Westerners, no matter how Aryan and/or Christian both they and those ruling over them otherwise were, had been living in utmost poverty and misery for many, many centuries, despite the fact that the (proto-)industrialization rendered the West by far the richest part of the world.

Mainly because of the emerging workers’ movement was the ruling (and possessing) class eventually forced to share at least a few of their riches. Much as the emerging of a possessing class of non-aristocratic citizens had once made it impossible for feudalist aristocratic landowners to oppress all the rest of society, was this new capitalist ruling class now unable to rule alone anymore, as they had to fear the strikes and uprisings of a working class that began to organize and fight for their own class interests.

Significantly, this non-possessing class (=not possessing factories, real estate, or banks) had begun to organize under independently elected leaders. In their organizations, snitches, shills, and rats (today, this would be akin to agents from FBI and CIA, to government and capital-funded feminists, or woke liberals who divert anger and attention away from the ruling class to “old white men”, etc.) were quickly removed. Out of fear of an even “worse” revolution of the non-possessing class, how it later actually occurred in Russia, the so-called “welfare state” came into existence: old-age pensions, accident insurance, employment and dismissal protection, health insurance, high-tariff policies to protect profits and wages from foreign competition, the 38-hour-week, and the very weekend itself (an old union poster had a little girl on it and the caption “Saturday, Daddy belongs to me!”) All according to the idea of “sacrifice a part to save the whole”.

(This, too, was the reason why Western Germany enjoyed such an incredibly high standard of living during the Cold War. Since Western Germany was meant to be the “window to the west”, US mega-capital pampered and spoiled the small country until the standard of living there was unsurprisingly high. If people in the East had looked over to the Western bloc and had only seen Merkel, Muslims, feminists, increasingly more poverty, people begging on the streets, impoverished pensioners fishing recyclable bottles ut of trashcans, they wouldn’t have been so enthusiastic to join Uncle Sam’s degenerate empire of evil. Ironically, the relatively high living standard between the end of WW II and the end of the Cold War was largely due to the Capitalists being afraid of the Socialists. It's really a vague idea. Different socialisms can have different aims in respect to what sort of societal values they prioritize.
