Europe was always dominant, the entire world's history for the past thousands of years revolved around European civilization which eventually dominated the entire world, something Islam never even came close to. Did Alexander the great go westward or eastward - no he went Persia, Pakistan and Egypt and was aiming for the Arabian peninsula before he died. Roman Empire at it's greatest extent it's hotspots were mainly north Africa and Middle East - they always considered eastward expansion more important just like the Greek. For most of history the West has tried to conquer the Middle East (and still does today through it's proxies like Saudi), even the crusaders (which were a fail) spent hundreds of years travellign thousands of miles just to get knocked the fuck out.
