I was about to give up on American cinema all together and watch only European productions, but last night, while flipping channels, I saw American Beauty. It has to be one of the most based takes on the "american dream" at the turn of the millennium. A film like this would have never been made today.

American Beauty is a story about a man's eternal struggle against the fear of going over-the-hill, getting cucked and eventually divorce-raped.

Americanbeauty10

Kevin Spacey plays a 40something magazine executive caged in a marriage which suffers a severe case of a dead bedroom. His Karen-of-a-wife constantly berates him for being a beta loser, while she fucks a real estate mogul behind his back, while his estranged Becky teenage daughter hates him. At the beggining of the movie he is seen masturbating in the shower alone as he narrates the story, saying: "look at me! Jerking off in the shower. This will be the high point of my day. It's all downhill from here".

Everything changes for him the day he goes to pick up his daughter from high school, where he is introduced to his daughters best friend -- a blonde jb cheerleader (played by Mena Suvari), and starts drooling at the sight of her, as he were possessed. His daughter is disgusted and creeped out by her father having the hots for a 16 year old girl, but the movie doesn't call for the viewer to make moralistic judgments or problematize the age gap.

The film rather shows the sheer re-invigorating power that developing a oneitis has. Spacey fantasies about the blonde loli at nights, describing the feeling as blood pumping through his veins again after 20 years of living a life of a dead man. He starts working out and smoking pot. Befriends the mentalcel Chad drug dealer next door who supplies him with a-grade weed developed by the us military. The friendship between them is supposed to be a contrast; youthful care free badboy and the square oldcel wageslave being reignited.

His libido becomes so intense his wife wakes up to the sound of him fapping one night -- she freaks out and threatens to divorce him for being a pervert, to which he starts dropping nuclear redpills about having to live a celibate life out of fear of being labeled a creep, and as he shuts the bitch down -- the camera focuses on his smirk as the scene gets accompanied with a playfully upbeat tune, inviting the viewer to root for Spacey character's newly found will to reclaim and defend his manhood.

Here is a man who always tried to please everyone around him at the expense of himself, and was still left on ignore by his own family, a cautious tale of american youth obsessed culture, the Yes Chad movie of unapologetic male sexuality.

sounds interesting tbh. a stark contrast to how old/unattractive men are usually expected to be asexual and castrate themselves, despite men's natural desire for sexual intimacy

It's one of the rare critically acclaimed movies that doesn't shit all over masculinity and calls out the hypocrisy of foids. Everybody loved this movie when it came out but its reputation has plummeted with the change in political atmosphere.

Kevin spacey has a lot of great movies, definitely gonna take a look on this one.

It´s funny to notice that the majority of marriages end up like the one described on the movie and you touched a very ''taboo'' subject which is the expectation that old and/or unnatractive men have to be asexual to not be labeled ''creep'' aka ugly guy trying to have intimacy.

It's reputation has suffered after the financial crash and a time when the soyladden vice/buzzfeed identity obsessed woke crowds saw their rise on social media. Now everyone is kvetching about how the main character is a toxic, privileged white predator. The fate of the movie is going through what the statue of Venus went: in ancient greece it was venerated, in medieval Europe it was seen as a ominous idol.

This movie has good cinematography, music, acting, and direction.
But it kind of has an adolescent viewpoint and that's why it appealed to me more when I was a teenager.
For example, it swears that the windblown bag really is beautiful when it's just trite.

But that's besides the point because most criticisms of the film are on an ideological level.
By that logic, Birth of a Nation and Triumph of the Will are bad movies, which is wrong.

This kinda reminds me of Walter White.

Became one of my favorite movies when I saw it as a teen.
Spacey's daughter has a damn nice pair of tiddies

Confidence and persistence.....

American Beauty and Breaking bad have many similar parallels. Its a transformation of man from a cuck to a narcissist without moral regard. Both are great pieces of art worth watching. It goes to show how you literally get nowhere in life when you play by the rules. And normies wonder why people suddenly "snap".

american beauty is a fucking masterpiece. Kevin Spacey is one of the best actors of all time, giving one of if not his best performance ever in this movie. Also, Kevin Spacey did nothing wrong, he is a saint.

Fun fact: the screenplay is written by a faggot

The 90s seems like an interesting time. A period of interregnum between the tension of the cold war and the tension of the war on terror following 2001 and later the uncertainty of the 2008 crash. A strong economy and almost complete American hegemony. The so called 'end of history' as Francis Fukuyama thought. Oh how wrong he was!
I am interested in what you said about the financial crash. Do you mean to say that Lester's problems seem pathetic and adolescent (he has a good job and a house which he rejects) after the hardship of the financial crash when people's problems supposedly became more concrete instead of existential?

I remember watching this film around when it came out and thinking the guy's attraction to the JB foid was "creepy", now when I watch it I sympathize with him

Seen it and yes it was honestly a really good film. I only gave in after watching the trailer because I presumed it would be just another american pie flick, but after watching it, I honestly felt bad for misjudging it.

Films like that are pretty rare so I cherish them more, even with films such as Taxi Driver, A clockwork Orange and Joker. Boyhood and Into the Wild are pretty good but pretty depressing.

In 1999, the American economy was healthy; job growth was robust, and investors were optimistic. Today for millenials having no job at all, being joblessness is their number-one problem. In the following two decades after the release of American Beauty, Spacey's character would go from being the seen as the archetypal rebel of American cinema, to a toxic privileged white guy

Millenials, apart from being ultra-liberal on certain social issues, are a pretty boring generation. They're obsessed with normalcy, being nt, and calculating age gaps, fixated on 'faking it until making it" -- the opposite of what Lester does in the movie. Millenials are all about being professional (notice the populartiy of nazi haircuts, and adulting), they look down on anything that isn't finance, engineering and stem -- they want to live Lester's boring life. In other words it's envy that is driving millenials to hate American beauty. What Lester was doing was a a luxury millenials can't afford anymore.

Interesting. I have always thought that there is sort of a strange streak of conservatism in the modern millennial lefty identity politics. The 60s and 70s left wing boomers who protested Nixon (who were shit in their own way and made possible the awful culture we have today) at least had a sense of anti-conformity, youthful joy, and anti-authoritarianism. They resisted a black and white/good vs evil concept of morality that older conservatives of that time clung to. Millennial leftists are the opposite; they can sometimes be quite puritanical and strictly resist any moral ambiguity and bizarrely expect a 'good' person to do only 'good' things all the time and forever.

I wonder if 'left wing' millennials will switch sides once they realise they eventually get decent jobs, start having to pay serious tax and realise that socialism isn't all it's cracked up to be if you want to live Lester's suburban middle class life in the corporate world.

In the 60s, 70s, 80s, 90s, and even Bush years American homosexuals and atheists found it difficult to be anything other than left wing. In the Obama years when the American right softened on sexuality and the cultural power of Christianity seriously waned, a lot of them realised that they never really were left wing in the first place. Hence, a large portion of all those internet 'New Atheists' of the 00s went to the right in the 2010s.

It would be interesting to see if something similar happens en masse to the SJWs as they age.

Precisely quodos you have found the last bastion of american cinema
One of my favourite films of all time, destroying the myth of white collar america and lampooning it for all its solipsissm narcissism and vanity, competely image focussed shallow society that it is.

the truth in this movie is eternal and is a s pure as New York snow.

however it did not seem to have done spacey any good as he still learned zero from the movie and went fulkl hold your fire crazy

the whole story sounded based except one part, the daughter being digusted by her dad. That part doesn't sound realistic

i loved that movie as a teenager , cause it has this motivational message
and it made me think life could get better if i wanted it .

But it didnt .

Great find and very good insights into it, will watch.

super high iq observation, they are a walking morally bankrupt contradiction, if it doesnt benefit people they associate with and themselves they throw it under the bus and attack it without decency, if the person is NPC and lookjs "right" "chad world fallacy" every fault is apologised nfor and is waved away as "haters",

THEY FUCKING SUCK

The counter culture in the 1960s was still oozing with testosterone, many feminists hated it. Young boomer men supported 'sexual liberation' and other left-wing causes just to get laid more. I can't blame em'. But what they at least had was a thriving youth culture where the average guy could try and live out those precious moments of his youth, today young men are just offered porn and a fleshlight.

With millenials you get the decline of subcultures after 2010, with young guys missing out the important milestones of their lives. Rather than taking the system on, they want to become a part of it as soon as possible. It's a sad boring world for a lot of them -- the ridiclious niche identity politics is part of this lack of a serious thrill in life.

the whole story sounded based except one part, the daughter being digusted by her dad. That part doesn't sound realistic
What's not realistic about it? Many teenage girls cringe at their dads.

no. maybe its an incel trait, but they were great.

I realized my mistake as soon as I typed that out.
You have to put yourself more in a normie frame of mind.
He doesn't want to be seen with his parents at the mall because they're not cool, etc, and he would look like a child when he wants to be seen as adult.
Also, in Face/Off, the daughter is similarly disgusted by her dad; it's a common movie trope.

movie =/= real life. They're teaching kids to hate their parents and rebel with brainwashing. Communist propaganda to make kids rebel and accept stupid ideas like communism, that was the end goal.

The movie wasn't entirely realistic anyway. It was very atmospheric and somewhat fairy-tale like.
And if the movies were teaching kids to hate their parents and rebel, don't you think some kids would have taken that bait? That would result in predictive programming, and the archetype would become realistic.
I'm sure a lot of teenage foids at the time didn't like their dads. I didn't have a problem with that aspect of it.

you're all forgetting "Falling Down" Literally the decline of the white man and family.

My entire life has been nothing but asexuality. With nothing and nobody to even befriend and nobody to understand. It feels like my insides are boiling and everything that happens only seems to make it worse.

you're all forgetting "Falling Down" Literally the decline of the white man and family.
Personally find American Beatuy far more aesthetic and tasteful. The writer of Falling Down claims he meant it as a critique of white middle class privilege, and that D-FENS was not the hero audiences mistaken him to be.

kind of eery how FG premieres this parody the very weekend mods outlaw wanting to fuck highschool cheerleaders on these boards
