Then why didn't they rebel for hundreds, hell, in other parts of the world even thousands of years? The idea of them rebelling against the tradition of marriage would have never even crossed anyone's minds 100 years ago. Divorce was only a thing that really powerful monarchs could do once in a while, but that was it. Women could cheat, for sure, but if they were found out they were in for a world of pain.
