why do non-functioning images sometimes preview successfully?

Firstly, I love how this forum has the option to either upload an image or to just post a link to it.

In the latter case, it often does work.

In some cases though, websites I think have protections which just show a red X displayed, which prevents the embedding of their image on external sites.

I notice this once I submit a post, but for some reason it successfully displays when I am actually constructing the post, and I'm not sure why.

Is there something that could be changed in the code so that images that won't display post-submission will be prevented from displaying pre-submission?

That way if I know what will fail ahead of time, I will know I need to replace the image (either find a different URL, or just save it and upload it) before submitting, rather than editing it later.

Probably you see them in preview because you're asking the server to show it, but when you post you're asking for a hotlink every time someone views the page. That's my theory, at least, but no solution.
