One horrified eyewitness was the German publicist Konrad Engelbert Oelsner, himself a Jacobin sympathizer: "It is the women who, in all the stormy appearances of the Revolution, always first conceived and exercised horrors or incited men to fresh torments and acts of murder. On the night following the terrible day they are said to have pried upon the corpses, roasted the limbs of the slain, and proposed to eat them. Even on the morning of the eleventh I saw women digging into the corpses and mutilating the lifeless parts. One notices this tendency to debauchery even in the educated class of the sex."
