In any case, trust in governments is something I've been meaning to explore. For many people, that trust is blind. The roots of that trust may be similar to a paternal relationship. The child implicitly and explicitly trusts the parent, and so there would be no expectation of evil being done to them. How could a parent commit evil to their child? The mere suggestion of it is vile and abhorrent. Likewise, the idea that governments, namely democratically elected ones, would commit evil upon their own citizens that they're supposed to be protecting is an alien and incomprehensible thought. People will reject the truth, even in the face of undeniable evidence, if their underlying, fundamental beliefs are challenged. That's a fact of the human condition with how identity and personal values are tied.
Is it naivety and the goodness of the many being exploited by the ruthless few? Most certainly. Does this warrant our ire towards the majority who are being fooled? Yeah, probably. Is it our job to convince the fools they're being fooled? NOPE. As Mark Twain adroitly said, "it's easier to fool people, than it is to convince them that they are being fooled."
