This was written as a reply to a thread but it's be wasted there. Christianity was supposed to be a completely different religion to the one we know today. This post examines just one of the many ways that the Romans corrupted it to suit their pagan tastes, and robbed the world of what should have been.

The thing bible non-readers don't know is that Joseph was on his way to divorce Mary when an angel told him not to do it. Now, Mary should be an even smaller footnote in the bible than Joseph. How did Christianity blow Mary up into what it has? Simple, they threw out the old testament. It's in the old testament that there's a curious prohibition, one that most people think is random and not relevant to the present day...

“You shall not plant any tree as an Asherah beside the altar of the Lord your God that you shall make. (Deuteronomy 16:21)

Asherah is the name of the Canaanite fertility goddess who is the wife of the patriarch of the gods. She is analogous to Hera/Juno. The patriarch of the gods, he is called Anu in the Sumerian pantheon, but in the Canaanite pantheons he is called El. El is one of the epithets for the God of Abraham, and it features in many biblical names like Samuel, Michael, Gabriel, etc. Hence, planting Asherah trees beside altars to God was a thing people would naturally do as they started mixing pagan practices into the religion. Asherah trees are forbidden because they are specific violation of the general law against idolatry.

What's this got to do with Mary? Well, Mary's role in birthing Jesus is all fine and good, but look what she's been made into. Her role as his mother has been emphasized, and her role as Joseph's wife and subordinate has been deleted. Whose wife is she, then? She has been made into God's wife, his Asherah. And from this follow many things:

• Mary is "first among the saints"
• Mary is the "queen of heaven"
• Mary is the "all-mother"
• Calling out to Mary to "save us"

Mary has been made into an Asherah tree, paganizing Christianity, and from this follows massive simping and pussy-worship. Indeed, you can see this in any Eastern Orthodox church in the icons: right next to the door leading into the altar, either to the left or to the right, there is an icon of Mary holding baby Jesus.

Being an empire promoted diversity, the original Romans are the inhabitants of a small plain in Italy. By the time of Jesus, the empire had conquered as far as Judea. Italians were already a minority in their own empire at that point. The blame just doesn't stick.
