Sounds silly but hear me out.
Living in the wild with the most minimal tools is HARD FUCKING WORK.
A tribe's success was heavily dependent on every individual in the population. Even if you couldn't hunt, there needed to be people involved in flint-knapping, people involved in gathering sticks, leaves, and constructing tools and shelters. You needed someone to skin the hides, tan them and make them into clothing. Many of these tasks required men, and you needed the labour of everyone in your tribe in order to survive.
Therefore, your interests were directly tied to the interests of others in your tribe. It lead to a situation in which men had to treat each other equally. Even the most "Alpha" of males in a tribe needed to ensure that the other males felt a sense of belonging and attachment to the tribe, and if he tried to acquire more goods than other men he could easily be banished or killed. So it was important that every man had his material (including sexual) needs met so that the tribe can be as productive and wealthy as possible to weather anything that nature had to throw at it.
Caveman societies that allowed a small number of men to impregnate and monopolize most of the women just could not survive. The men would just drop out of that tribe or solve it through violence, which would inevitably ruin the tribe's productivity and make it extinct.
Hypergamy only started to happen with the onset of agriculture, where some men were able to acquire far more resources than other men and could hire men to capture and enslave other men to keep them in line. From there, hypergamy was able to flourish. It led to a situation where only one man reproduced for every seventeen women, until religion would later be invented to enforce monogamy.
Basically, the agricultural revolution and its consequences were a disaster for the human race.
