Ever heard of the phrase "familiarity breeds contempt", for petty reasons like bullying may lead to hatred of one's own race. It is a common occurrence in high school, people will want to ship people of the same race. People may feel like dating another of one's own race is like dating a family member; although the reality might show that it's complex as the ethnicity could be different, they just share a similar phenotype.

Maybe it's this frustration toward the idea that people should go with people who share similar phenotypes that lead to frustration and race envy.
