Ukraine baited Russia into redeploying south and then steamrolled understaffed north. On top of significant recent attrition with HIMARS bombing.
It doesn't seem like Russia will be able to form a defensive line anytime soon, they just lost their biggest logistics hub there.
Expect them to retreat deeper and lose more cities in the following days, most probably.

Obviously I don’t know enough about geopolitics or military tactics to have any confident opinion.
However, I am wondering a lot about how this situation will play out. Will Putin just strike a deal with Ukraine and just annex the Donbas and Luhansk (predominantly Russian speaking areas of Ukraine) and say ‘We were just trying to protect ethnic Russians in Ukraine and we achieved that! Well done to the brave soldiers of the special operation’. Then Ukraine will go on to join the EU and maybe even NATO along with Finland and even Sweden.
OR will Ukraine get cocky and try to push Russia out completely even from Crimea (an area that is 99% Russian, only bizarrely given to Ukraine region of USSR by Stalin and probably actually should belong to Russia tbqh). Then will the Russians just panic as they cannot be seen to lose a war and just go full fucking nuclear.
It will be interesting to see.

You need infantry to hold urban population centres, it makes sense for russians to retreat and give battle in open terrain where they can deploy their mechanised and artillery forces with much clearer lines of sights, observation points and drones. Ukrainian terrain after all is flat steppes, ideal for artillery and mass mechanised formations. How are Ukrainians advancing in that terrain tho, they'd need large formations and numbers of IFVs, APCs and tanks to keep their infantry safe from shelling and small arms fire. 200,000 men is comically low for the vast steppe frontlines of Ukraine ngl, and not even all of them are frontline troops, war is manpower and industry intensive, slavic poons are not working as much now to replenish and increase their manpower.
