The current pandemic is showing us that the economy is not robust enough to make us all preppers.
There will be a second wave, and nothing will stop us from returning to the stone age, except on some small islands (if any).
There are five barriers to preventing a pandemic from destroying civilization:
- Vaccines / cures
- Basic sanitation
- Awareness
- Robust health system
- Political will
The first barrier obviously does not exist, at least for the next 12/18/24 months.
The second barrier is essential and its absence, by itself, already condemns a society to complete destruction, both economic and sanitary. Very poor countries are already out of the game. But its mere existence only slows down the process, and depends on the next two barriers.
The third barrier is, without a doubt, the most important of all, because it can be decisive to overcome a pandemic situation. Wearing masks, isolation for long enough, hygiene habits, all can help a lot. And I don't see much hope here. In Brazil, where I live, people don’t wear masks, don’t stay at home, kiss and hug, crowd and party, have street meals without the slightest care, and come into contact with elderly relatives. Manaus, Fortaleza, Recife, Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo are already in an alarming situation.
The fourth barrier only tells you when the death toll will skyrocket. Manaus, having the worst health system in Brazil, was the first place to collapse and where the bodies are already being piled up. Fake news that the coffins were empty made the relatives demand their opening, exposing putrid, swollen and worms-eaten corpses.
Finally, the fifth barrier. Governments should wipe the machine down, as private initiative has collapsed and is no longer in a position to sustain heavy government. This is not happening anywhere, at least as far as I know. On the contrary, government spending is exploding at unbelievable levels. This will only make the future depression absolutely lethal.
When the economy finally collapses, there will be no way to sustain the quarantine and the economy will have to come back anyway. As soon as this happens, nothing will stop the second wave, since the health system will already be in shambles and unable to treat any patient. I foresee bodies thrown on the streets, as happened in Ecuador. It's over. Just LDAR.
