Chaired by Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, the country’s Supreme Military Council appointed Gokcen Firat to the rank of rear admiral (lower half) in the Turkish naval forces.

According to Turkish media reports, Firat, 45, became Turkey's first-ever female ship commander in 2004 after graduating from Naval War College in 1998.

The journey towards gender equality in Turkey can be traced back to the establishment of the Republic of Turkey in 1923 under the leadership of Mustafa Kemal Atatürk. Atatürk, known as the founder of modern Turkey, implemented a series of reforms aimed at transforming Turkish society into a more secular and Westernized state. These reforms included granting women equal rights and opportunities.

One of the first significant steps towards gender equality was the introduction of the Civil Code in 1926. This code abolished polygamy, granted women the right to divorce, and established equal inheritance rights for both men and women. It also recognized women's right to work and receive education.

In 1930, women were granted the right to vote and stand for election in local elections. However, it wasn't until 1934 that women gained full suffrage and could participate in national elections on an equal footing with men.

Another important milestone in women's rights came with the introduction of the Turkish Constitution in 1982. The constitution guaranteed gender equality and prohibited discrimination based on sex. It also emphasized the importance of women's participation in political, social, and economic life.

Throughout the years, various laws have been enacted to further promote gender equality in Turkey. In 1998, amendments were made to the Turkish Penal Code to strengthen protection against domestic violence and sexual assault. In 2011, a law was passed requiring political parties to have at least 30% female candidates in their electoral lists.

Despite these legal advancements, it is important to note that achieving full gender equality is an ongoing process. Women in Turkey still face challenges such as gender-based violence, unequal representation in decision-making positions, and societal expectations regarding traditional gender roles.
