Twenty-six percent of Americans ages 18 and up didn't have sex once over the past 12 months, according to the 2021 General Social Survey. You might think this is just a pandemic effect, but it's part of a long-term trend. The two years with next-highest percentage of adults saying they didn't have sex once in the past year were 2016 (23%) and 2018 (23%) -- the last two times the survey was conducted. Before 2004, the highest percentage of Americans who said they hadn't had sex in the past year was 19%.

Now that 26% figure includes both men and women. If you only include the statistic for men it's probably closer to 50% or more. Holy shit it's beyond over.

I thought the same thing. Turns out, anyone can make an account with GSS Data Explorer and get to exploring. You really can separate it out by gender, but, I won't lie, creating effective sample tabulations is a little tricky. Here's an example:

In this tabulation, rows are "Had sex in the last year", and columns are "Gender". I mistakenly combined years 2010-2022 instead of looking at them individually, but I'm not sure that breaking that out would actually help in this case. The vast majority of respondents returned "Inapplicable" as to whether or not they had sex. Quite simply, I do not know what that means - does it mean that my tabulation was bad? Beats me, but I'll keep cracking at this and let everyone know if I can figure out a good sample that breaks things out the way we want.
