I agree that in many fields there are high standards and competition is just brutal. Things with you were seen as specialist years ago are not even seen today as entry level.
One thing on the list I don't agree though - ACADEMICS.
Currently to obtain degree you need to know a lot less plus almost all the knowledge you need for getting degree is to find on the internet with few clicks while 30 years ago students had to spent shit ton of hours in library.
Academics aka getting degree was never easier.
