A group of Boston restaurant owners have filed a $1.5 million complaint against Michelle Wu over an allegedly discriminatory outdoor dining policy.

The owners of five restaurants in Boston, Massachusetts, are alleging they have been discriminated against because of their white, Italian background by the city's Democrat Mayor Michelle Wu. The legal dispute stems from the levying of a fee on restaurants in the North End area—which is known for its Italian heritage—for placing tables outside for outdoor dining. Court documents cited a joke she made in a St Patrick's Day speech on March 17, 2022, in which she said: "I'm getting used to dealing with problems that are expensive, disruptive and white."

In 2022, Wu ordered that restaurants in the area that wanted to have outdoor dining for that summer would have to apply for a license to do so, which would cost $7,500, and the use of parking spaces would cost an additional $480 per space used. Court documents state that the order didn't apply to other restaurants elsewhere in Boston, noting that there were at least 114 restaurants in the nearby vicinity with outdoor dining, a majority of which were not charged for a license. Some 15 percent of all city licenses were given to restaurants in the North End.

"It is commonly known that the traditional owner of a restaurant in the North End of Boston is a white male of Italian descent," the complaint said. "And the North End is generally regarded as the last true ethnic Boston Italian neighborhood."

The documents also claimed that white Italian owners were omitted from the city's All Inclusive Boston Campaign, which was aimed at attracting tourism and promoting minority-owned businesses.

i lived in canada for most of my life. italians might not be considered white because of how they look since i guess they can be confused for being arabic, but if you ask anyone in canada if italians are white im pretty sure 99% would say yes.

No, that is a cope. I thought European = white due to American media, but that was definitely not the case when I started talking to people here and Italians. Almost none of then identify as white, and I know white Italians that brag about passing as white.

French (who are white) are also considered minorities unironically. The dynamics are similar to America, but there are also many things that are different.

Basically... but not exactly. In North America, or at least the US, your race is the most important thing deciding and determining your identity. Basically, your phenotype/colour is the most important thing about you there.

Basically, what I'm saying, it's not really that Western Europeans are "so racist" that they are "racist against other whites." They are just regularly racist/xenophobic/whatever against foreigners and outsiders, it's just that who is a foreigner or outsider to them is differently defined there (and in the rest of the world) than in the US, which is why Americans find it bizarre to see those groups discriminating against each other, since in the US, they're seen as the same group.

In that case, it seems that (contrary to the map I posted above) identity there is seen in more "Eurasian" terms than American ones, with nationality/ethnicity (just ethnicity honestly, though it might seem like nationality is also important, but that's just because in a lot of those countries those two terms are pretty much the same, ethnicity trumps all in Europe and Asia (East Asia at least)) being more important than phenotype/skin colour.
