Not 100% sure of the details but he was the Pennsylvania state treasurer and was being framed for embezzling funds and was sure to be sent to prison so in an attempt to make things better for his family he blew his brains out so they could inherit the survivor's benefits, supposedly it was later proven he was innocent. Goes to show that if you are an ugly male people just assume you are of low character.
