It’s not safe. Not 100% you get sick either, but you should always use a water filter. There are various types ranging mostly from 20-100usd.

Depends on what the water looks like, if it is dark and diluted you can still get sick even after boiling it.
Collecting rain water is your best bet if you can.
Avoid a lot of water with too much algae as it can be a sign of fertilizer chemical spillovers, and you can usually tell if water is bad to consume like dead fish or animals nearby.

one that comes directly from a mountain generally should be polluted by metals and sediments.
the same river can be polluted if you take the water further down past a place where farmland bs is dropped in but can be clean if you take it further up.
