It's over for him now, but some of it would be looks, but seeing how in his personal life area they say he's a private person, I'll say he has the same problem most of us have as well. Social anxiety, lack of some social skills and a bit introverted.
When you're like that and you look like that, I would say if he was assertive he could've probably had someone a couple of decades ago.

Modern day, he won't find anyone unless it is for his money.
