Auckland is New Zealand's biggest city.

In the 1970s, Karangahape Rd ("K Rd") at the uphill end of Auckland's CBD, was a notorious hive of drug use, illegal gay nightclubs and saunas, strip clubs and street prostitution.

All of that moved out by the end of the 1980s but vested interests like landlords and shopkeepers have always clung to K Rd's name and the hint of sexy danger and intrigue that everyone associates with it. Even though today it is all art galleries and coffee shops for urban bohemians and art students. It always used to be the route for the annual gay pride parade.

Naturally, K Rd is where the city council decided to spend hundreds of thousands of ratepayer dollars painting a rainbow pedestrian crossing on the road, to show solidarity with the LGBTQII+ community.

Well last night some MF poured hundreds of litres of white paint all over the rainbow and obliterated it!
