Since 2020, searches for anime & anime related topics are at their all time peak. This is obviously in part due to "quarantine"; however, I believe the otaku culture is going to keep rising. People are now exposed to it, and weebs are actually becoming more normified (whether this is a good/bad thing is another story). On the other hand, as dating & traditional relationships become exponentially unobtainable, more men are going to cope with virtual waifus since there is absolutely nothing redeemable from an actual "3D" woman other than a hole.

Stuff was still obscure late 2000’s. No one got into it apart from social outcasts or weird ones. The major normies are the ones getting on it recently, but I do agree the trannies and other shits have been into it way before and infesting. Shonen will still stay shonen, and I haven’t seen any shift from it. Other shows like AoT are still based on manga. Berserk isn’t likely to change. However there are new shows that are heavily saturated in unnecessary echhi and harem stuff, which I was fine with in a few shows that were subtle about it.

Never said or implied that anime wasn't already rising or that it wasn't "obscure". The point of the observation was that the recent rise of anime is on another level on top of the popularity it had already been gathering before.

Besides anecdotal observations, I think these examples help bring the point home. While other trends/cultures related to staying inside have already long since stabilized nearly to pre-quarantine levels, the above has in fact continued to rise. Quarantine was the spark which made the larger amount of consumption & discussion needed in the first place to help create this sort of growth.

Again, I never made the point that "anime has never been mainstream until now", rather, I tried to point out that the recent rise of anime--on top of the growth it has already experienced--is at a level that has not very much seen before.
