They could've produced a larger copy of the V92 engine (proven and reliable technology) similarly to how the Chinese Type 99 enlargened the T-72 hull to fit in the MTU power unit from Leopard 2 (not the only reason they did that though).

Instead they went with novel unnecessary "futurist" X engine layout, just like how T-64 tried to do so and was unreliable and the return of a diesel power unit, in form of the T-72 ironically made it one of the most reliable and proven tanks there is

For instance, the T-72 was licensed to numerous Soviet and Russian allies, but it doesn't match the quality of a Russian-made T-72.

What I'm saying is, many of those who ridicule Russia live in nations lacking the infrastructure and technology to manufacture licensed weapons, let alone conduct independent research.

Developing your weapons capability isn't feasible for every country, not even the wealthier ones. Take Japan, for example; it still borrows heavily from german technology since ww2, albeit with some modifications.
