Basically the 3 Baltic state of Lithuania, Latvia & Estonia, and Finland, Ukraine, Belarus, Moldova, Georgia, Armenia & Azerbaijan were part of the Russian Empire. And most of eastern Poland.

This is with the modern borders being drawn in.

Yes Russian empire was massive by the peak of the ussr it had even more countries. Crazy how they expanded from the Kievan Rus to a territory this massive.

Well they seem to just be a big territory. Kazakhstan does not have a large population to country ratio. Same with a lot of the Stans, however the territories Russia controlled over were huge

Kyrgyzstan: 6.6 million
Turkmenistan: 6.0 million
Azerbaijan: 10.0 million
