Various shadowy persons, e.g. pimps, thieves sometimes pick on you and try to involve you in the life of crime. Criminals are often sociopaths or psychopaths so they easily check on and analize people's personalities. When they see an ugly man, they know that he has nothing to lose, that he is a societal pariah and don't defend interests of the society by all means. Also they understand that he lives shitty unfulfilled life and do not care for preservation of his own life.
