Communism was only as effective as those who were administering the state on its behalf so that had Trotsky prevailed over Stalin, there would not have been the famine in the Ukraine and had more competent and technically skilled leaders ascended to the position of General Secretary of the CPSU, the ambient quality of life would have been massively improved. Just look at how bungling the response of the state was to Chernobyl and that was in the mid-80's during the height of Soviet power.
