Listen to any old time radio show from say the 40s or 50s. The hardest most manly men are chewing gum, eating chocolate, drinking coke—along with the cigarettes and alcohol of course. In any hard boiled noir the guy going to jail always gets some candy, gum, and if possible reading material, to make his cell feel “more like home.”
