Putin taking a binder of documents and then sperging out on Russian history was more a justification for his irredentist aims than any serious attempt to answer any questions sincerely. Of course, Tucker asked virtually no questions of note - he got steamrolled.

I did note that he was fairly accurate about the situation Poland was in prior to WWII. They did, in fact, sign non-aggression pact with Germany in 1934 - but they also signed one with the Soviet Union in 1932. The German economy had neared crisis in 1936, 1938, and early 1939, but they patched this over by seizing the gold reserves of Austria and Czechoslovakia. Hitler needed to act in 1939 or never, basically - that is the dilemma he faced. Britain and France needed to push for war before their economies also overheated.

Then there is the question of Czechoslovakia - I didn't really object to anything Putin said. Poland sought to cynically profit from the German abrogation of the Munich Agreement in March 1939 by occupying the disputed Zaolzie region. This was met with outrage in London, with Churchill calling Poland the 'hyena of Europe'. However, the fact Germany had torn up the 1938 necessitated a guarantee to Poland. The fact is, 1930's foreign policy was messy and constantly evolved.

Hitler's attitude also evolved from one of wanting an alliance with Britain in 1935 to assigning the status of 'hate-filled antagonist' in the Himmerod Memorandum in 1937. His speeches had already become overtly hostile in February 1939, even before he violated the Munich Agreement - to the point it appeared he was trying to woo France away from the Entente. The French had explored the possibility of an alliance or defensive pact with the Soviet Union in 1934, but nothing came of it - further explorations yielded little result. The main stumbling block to this was the British and the fall of the Popular Front in France government and attitudes within the British government, who could not envisage being in hock to communists. Stalin was appalled with their total lack of sincerity demonstrated by London and Paris, so sought to reach an agreement with Hitler.
