It all hit a speed bump once globalization of dating through the internet and smarphones came about. It's only after the internet, online dating/dating apps, social media and an outrage culture around aspects of nonchad male sexuality from identity politics (moral panics about rape on college campuses, concern about what constitutes proper consent, #metoo) that inceldom started becoming a really big problem in western countries.
Similarly it was thought in the past that instant travel allowed women to cheat more. But that didn't become really commonplace until women had the ability (through online dating/dating apps and social media) to meet with chads from farther away than their local hometown or province.

I'd argue that women entering the work force and becoming economically independent created a bigger gap towards free hypergamy than the introduction of the smart phone. Going from housewives depending on a man to earning your own living - a huge fucking step - meant that (because of how hypergamy works) she sought better than her at her current financial and professional station. The smart phone added lazy options and convenience, and inflated the sexual marketplace value of women, but being independent was the game changer.
