Thing about being unemployed is, you have to do things like sell plasma so you can afford rent. And when you sell plasma, the plasma center tests your sample every time. On my very first sample I was popped for HIV. Very weird, as I have never had sex.
Because I've never had sex, at first I'm thinking "Well there's gotta be a crazy story behind how this happened. This has gotta be a mistake." And they stress, the anti-HIV EIA is a reactive screening, not a diagnostic test. So this could be a false positive. It may just be detecting antibodies for some other virus inside me right now.
But then I get to thinking. I've sold plasma before, but this has never happened to me. Why now? Did they stick me with an infected needle or something? Again, I've sold plasma before. I know how an efficient and professional plasma center runs, and this place was smack dab in the absolute 'hood. It was like a McDonald's crossed with a hospital. Maybe their complacency about procedure got me infected?
I don't "feel" like I have HIV. But regardless, I'm banned for life as far as selling plasma. Per federal regulations. Even if this is a false positive I can never sell plasma so long as federal regulations stand. And that's the real bad news. I was counting on that money to make ends meet. The next step would be getting a comprehensive diagnostic test, but I don't have insurance. So I guess I would call the Health Department and see if they'll do it for free. I don't know. I don't know how testing for HIV works. Days are dark for me right now.
