Toxoplasma gondii is a sexually transmitted disease (STD) that seems to cause number of negative side effects, such as schizophrenia and psychotic episodes. However, it has been shown to make the people it affects more sexually attractive to the opposite sex.

One contention might be that this is because people that the STD are likely to have more sex, and be more attractive to begin with anyways. However, it seems there were studies done in rata that shows rats injected with it also became more sexually attractive. So the mechanism proposed is that it alters facial symmetry somehow and make the host more attractive. This will be beneficial to the std (which wouldn’t be a parasite, but rather a positive symbiotic relationship) as it is more likely to reproduce and pass onto others if it can make it’s host more attractive, which benefits both the host and the STD.

My thoughts exactly. I had never heard of toxoplasmosis being sexually transmitted. Always heard that it was transmitted by cats and that it makes us love cats.

Apparently it does, according to the study. Injecting mice with it increases mice smv. And hormonal control isn’t unknown, as it already is known to lead to schizo and psychosis in many.
