Let’s take a look at the situation with Russia/Ukraine. Putin is spending billions of dollars on tanks, warships, fighter jets, weapons and ammunition, paying the soldiers their salary etc. But Putin is bearing these costs with the goal of not only recovering the costs when the war is won, but also making profit on the top of that.

How does he do this?

well, If Putin wins the war, Ukrainian land will become part of Russia as it expands its territory. Russia can use Ukrainian land for mining, agriculture, development of infrastructure etc. all of which will generate more wealth for the Russian government.

Furthermore the citizens of Ukraine (whoever is left alive after the war and decides to remain on the land) will now become Russian citizens and they will be governed by Russia which means that instead of paying tax to the Ukrainian government, they will now be paying tax to the Russian government which means the Russian government generates even more wealth.

all wars throughout history have been fought for territory, precious metals/minerals and pre-existing infrastructure on the land (buildings, cities), conquering foreign populations to use the men for their labour and utility while using women for their sexual and reproductive resources etc.

the costs of war can be seen as nothing more than an investment made in the short term in order to gain profit in the long-term (in terms of wealth, resources). War is nothing more than a business.

And resources and breeding is about survival so it IMO war is about surviving as a tribe. But also war is a business and not necessarily for the benefit of the country, politicians start wars, spend state money and resources, send soldiers and citizens to fight and die, use military power to help their private companies, while they get longer mandate and more dirty money in pockets, when everything is done they usually flee to some far away country and enjoy their new fortune.

If other countries didn’t jump to Ukraine’s aid, if there was no foreign intervention in the war (in other words, if it was just Russia and Ukraine involved without involvement of other countries) Russia would be winning this war easily.

The point of view of the US may also be similar. The current outrage fueled by Western media may be aimed at justifying a UN resolution to invade and disarm Russia.

Lately an expression kept popping in my mind : "the big fish".

That may be how the US has seen Russia ever since the collapse of the Soviet Union. Irak, by comparison, was a tiny fish. Lots of oil to grasp, but not that much in the grand scheme of things. To tackle the big fish, the US had to proceed very carefully, because that fish has nukes. But now I very much suspect that there has been a long plan to catch it eventually, with all these resources that are inside. They proceeded essentially with back-door shenanigans, using their cultural and economic influence to surround Russian borders, but the aim was to get the big fish all along.

The US is financially in dire straights, they won't be able to monetize their way out of troubles indefinitely, so maybe they're eying on that big catch to solve their problems.
